Not objecting from the in-universe point of view, but I must point out that texts that give "redemption" to mass murderers and the like are usually created by people who can't tell when it is that a character becomes absolutely unlikeable and irredeemable. Redeeming characters who have done horrible things (I mean really horrible things) is not due to "good people" being able to do bad stuff, it's due to the fact that the in-universe rules are so unbelievably fucked up.

Agree w this

there's a difference between moral complexity where a character who is a mass murderer or whatever is also capable of doing good things, and situations where a mass murder is redeemed. Redemption and complexity are totally different things.

I never read past book one, but this seems as good a place to ask as any: did Taylor ever offer any redemption to Karou's sister? I felt really bad for her. She didn't want to be a second-class citizen/considered less desirable than her sister and got treated as an irational hosebeast for it.

No. She disappeared completely from the books and was never even mentioned again.

Yeah, I was ticked off too. It was such a lame ending to that character, especially with all the "I will betray my best friend because I'm jealous of her" trope.

Well that's . . . sloppy.

And yeah, I agree completely- Taylor set up this whole world where certain beauty standards were upheld and people who didn't fit those standards were considered ugly/undesirable, and somehow she's the bad guy for being upset at this? And it turns her evil? OKAY THEN.
