When people say that are they talking about the typical slash tropes are do they mean that thinking two people are cute/hot together is something you grow out of when they're the same sex? 'Cause that second one is pretty weird.

Yeah, the thing fans outgrow is most likely indulgence in typical slash tropes. After a few years of slashing, it just seems pointless to point out 'these guys are so homo lol' since most instances are pretty obvious and in later years perhaps even intended. Nowadays I just enjoy slash ships neutrally like any other kind of romantic ships.

I imagine most people who say "lol you'll grow out of slash", mean stop liking gay couple all together (while associating gay couples with yaoi tropes). By being ~edgy~, they are just being dicks and trading gay fetish for anti-gay.

Then again, the hierarchy of "edgy fan" tends to be slash --> het --> femslash, with femslash making you the edgiest of all.
