I've never read the comics, but I've read online that Bucky was a kid and Steve's plucky sidekick before he was brainwashed completely, and something about how he became the Winter Soldier out of jealously that I'm not sure I believe.

Either way, his origin is VASTLY different in the MCU so I don't think you need to worry about them following whatever the comics canon is for his regaining his memories (something about the cosmic cube and crushing it in his hand?). Twice Bucky started remembering on his own in the movie and the after credits scene supported that, and I think they'll just stick with that as non-comics fans will follow that better.

What you read was wrong. Bucky was a teenager when he met Steve and by that point he was already being trained as a spy. The plucky sidekick was a cover. His real job was to do the things that Steve couldn't do so that the Captain America name wasn't tarnished.

He never became the Winter Soldier out of jealousy. He was brainwashed by Russia to get revenge upon the US. He was used for assassinations and for training other operatives to pass as American.

He gets his memories back all at once when Steve uses the Cosmic Cube. Overwhelmed with grief and guilt from the things he done while brainwashed, Bucky steals the cube from Steve and uses it to get away. He then ends up working for Nick Fury until Steve dies where he then becomes the new Captain America.

What you read mixed different versions of the comics/Bucky/their story line.
