Oh, the misuse of Decimate is a killer for me (It's right there in the word: Deci - Ten / Tenth / Ten Per cent). IT IS NOT A SYNONYM FOR ANNHILATE!

Also the Ancestor / Descendant issue that always pops up.

I have a soft spot for the ancestor / descendent confusion because a headline about Richard III's "ancestors" demanding a York burial for his recently-discovered remains was the inspiration for several Yultide fanfics last year.

I guess it's one of those words whose meaning has been warped over time into its inverse?

(Which is a subject I sort of find fascinating. I mean - take "discriminate." When applied to sensory perception of objects it means "to be able to distinguish very small differences" ... but when applied to people and nations means "to lump an entire group together as if they are homogeneous.")

Yeah, I suppose so. Words change meanings etc. I just like the word Decimate, and I always like trying to figure out where words come from based on how they break up, so Decimate always fascinated me.

On the subject of discriminate, I think I can see how it works. Sort of along the lines of:
"discriminate - To perceive small differences as significant." Either "I can discriminate between Coke and Pepsi" or "I can discriminate between the value of good white people, and bad dark people" You know?

.. sigh. Wouldn't it be great if people who DO discriminate and make sweeping statement of the "All [category] are [quality]" form would learn to discriminate the other way? To gather a little data about the individual before making a judgement?
