Oh good for you then :) I usually hear this complaint about that event, because they used it for 90%.

I guess I get why "annihilate" and "obliterate" aren't used, as they pretty much imply 100% destruction? But there has to be another word that means "destroy almost all."

(And now I'm in thesaurus mode. Purge sounds like a laxative is involved, I guess. The Persecution Event? religious connotations. The Great Mutant Hunt seems like they're whales. The perpetrators might call it The Cleansing, but I'll guess that The Decimation is what the survivors called it?)

---ETA:
I did find a discussion on this very thing, and a poster said that it is in fact proper English to use decimate to mean "Destroy the greater part of." They say that insisting that the word has to inherit the same meaning in English as it HAD in Latin is known as "the etymological fallacy."

*shrug* It's still going to sound wrong to me until I die, I think.

Yeah, there's nothing else that works for that meaning, though. All synonyms I can find actually mean destroy everyone/thing. It seems like we lack terms for greatly reduced in number, probably in a forceful way.
