Re: Small/Obscure Fandoms That Need More Love

As in "why I like it" or "why I want it to have a fandom"? If it's the latter, it was mostly the sheer number of opportunities for fascinating canon divergence. Even the ending is one huge AU opportunity. After the plot of the book started getting darker and darker, I expected the ending to be a dark climax of sorts, the "everyone dies unhappy" sort of thing. Won't want to spoil, but suffice to say, it wasn't like this at all. So I started wondering what it would be like if it WERE like this, because this seemed as logical and legitimate as the actual ending.

These canon divergence moments also coincide with good character development, and with some under-explored relationship dynamics between the heroes. There are many loose ends to tie.

If it is the former, I was charmed by its dark absurdist humour, its weirdly sympathetic unsympathetic characters (it's astounding how likeable Heller manages to make his miserable suckers of protagonists), and the mood whiplash that takes place mid-narrative. You are totally unprepared but suddenly you are thrown into Heller's perception of the universe and everything is odd and scary and distorted (as opposed to the tame things that were going on just a couple of moments ago).
