Fiction books - fantasy & sci-fi in particular.

It makes me sad, but it feels like I've read everything before. If I read ONE MORE blurb about a Chosen One, or a gritty medieval world, I will stab someone.

You'd think with fantasy people would be more inventive. I want the awe and wonder I felt as a child, exploring strange new worlds, but it's just all the same old shit repackaged. Either "DnD/Tolkien Ripoff" or "DARK GRIM REALISTIC FANTASY WITH ASSHOLE PROTAGONIST." Not even gonna touch urban/paranormal fantasy.

Not to mention there's a general lack of... well, diversity in fantasy, which is even more disappointing. Would it kill you to have a main character who's someone other than Generic Videogame Protagonist?

Paranormal fantasy must be terrrrible right now. All vampires and love triangles. Though I always liked Amelia Atwater-Rhodes books.

One of the bigger bookstore's I went to had a whole shelf just for what they called "Paranormal Romance" set aside from the general Sci-Fi/Fantasy shelves. I really appreciated that.
