wow yeah fuck the people who say that antidepressents are "the easy way out"

i certainly don't want to be on antidepressents, and i'm lucky because i don't need to

but labelling people who need medication as lazy or weak? that is horrible. that is just going to make their depression EVEN WORSE. good job!

it's not being "lazy" if you need medication to stop you from hurting yourself, ffs.

I didn't want to go on them for a long time either. I think I thought it would make me weak, before I really fully realized that depression is a chemical imbalance, a physiological disease; why refuse to take antidepressants when I wouldn't refuse to put a broken arm in a cast? I think a lot of people don't really understand that, though.

I pretty much went through the same thing. Then I realized that while I could come up with ways to help prevent myself from falling into the deep slumps, nothing I did could bring me up out the of general grey blah-ness that underlay the moodier aspects of my depression. That's what I decided I really needed medication for.

Yes, this is totally true. I think it's because we all have mood ups-and-downs and that's part of our normal chemistry, but we're also all supposed to have a relatively moderate mood baseline. It's the baseline that (in general) I think people with depression have an issue with, because some chemicals are fundamentally out-of-balance. I used to be afraid that meds would engineer a sort of false happiness in me, but as it turns out they just gave me the opportunity to be normal again - including sometimes feeling normal bouts of sadness or blues.
