I imagine because slash so often demonizes female characters to break up canon pairings so the hot guys can get it on.

Or maybe because slashers, who are primarily female, don't want to see their gender represented positively in fic.

To be honest, I think it has to do with insecurity as well. Male characters are often written as much more genuinely flawed than female ones -- they make mistakes and get character arcs much more often in fiction. And so not only are they more developed, but they can seem more human. They have both strengths and weaknesses to identify with. With female characters, it's true that they're increasingly presented as intelligent, strong, ambitious, beautiful, popular, etc -- which are all positive qualities. But they're not often portrayed as fucking things up the way male characters are.

I think a lot of girls/women find this hard to identify with and also might feel it's a standard that is impossible to live up to.

The answer to that is not to do those things, then, not "don't write or enjoy slash"

Speaking personally, I never, ever denigrate CFLIs and love to include positive representations of women. My canon contains a fair few good women characters, for a 19th century lit canon, and if one is still short, OFCs for the win!

This. I can't with the generalization that all slash fans are straight women who hate women. There are many queer fans of slash pairings, and not just women. Plus, not all people who read and write slash only exclusively stick to slash. Do those slash fans people complain about exist? Of course! But there are plenty of us that don't fit that definition. Liking slash isn't a zero-sum game where you either like it exclusively and are a straight women with internalized misogyny or you don't like it at all. I can see people complaining about slash FANDOM, but the idea of shipping two or more men in and of itself isn't the problem. And really, it's not like het doesn't suffer from the same problems. Some het shippers can sometimes be terrible about any girl that dares to "get in the way" of their ship as well, such as Harmonians calling Ginny a slut.
