I didn't want Shrek to become handsome. I wanted her to stay human and him to remain an ogre. Fiona staying who she was and Shrek staying who he is is shallow? I think the ending they chose is shallow. I don't see how an ending where a beautiful princess and an ugly ogre end up together could be shallow. That would defy fairy-tale norms and keep the message that true beauty is within. Having them both be ugly doesn't give a good message at all. It just says that Fiona can't be with Shrek unless she's ugly as well. *shrug*

::headscratch:: Have you read many fairytales? Cause there's TONS of them that end up that way--f'ex, a Chinese fairytale in which a horribly ugly scholar is given a beautiful wife, much to her displeasure, until the ugly scholar explains that before he was born, he saw the woman whom he was destined to end up marrying. She was the horrifically ugly one, and the scholar was so disgusted he asked the gods to give him all her ugliness and make her beautiful instead.

Maybe it's just me, but fairytales of that ilk leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes I think I've read that one.

...But Shrek isn't like that at all. Except for the aesthetics of the eventual relationship, I see no similarity. Fiona wouldn't be disgusted with Shrek being an ogre and vice versa and that would be the point. How does Fiona changing into someone unattractive (against her will I might add) at all convey the message that true beauty is within? I don't even see how this is a relatable comparison? The two stories are nothing alike and neither is their message.
