So write some bizarro fiction that doesn't have to do with sex.

Shit.

It's not your asexuality that's the problem, it's that you're an erotophobe. Plenty of asexuals aren't grossed out by sexy stuff.

Just so you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, I imagine that's why OP said "I'm asexual AND..." instead of assuming "asexual" covered it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't give them too much credit.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's what I was going for, sorry. I know not all asexuals are severely grossed out by sex, but this particular one is.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough.

I just know a lot of people who mistake erotophobia for asexuality. And they're assholes about it.

I am not sure I understand your problem?

Why don't you simply fade to black to avoid the gross part of sex?

Several great fanfic writers use that device with a lot of success. I just realized that one of my very favorite authors who I follow from fandom to fandom does this quite often, to the point where I recently read a comment complaining about the lack of explicit sex scenes and the consistent use of fade to black after lots of plot build-up.

After I recovered from my rotfl moment, I had to admit that was true and that her wonderful fics, full of passion, angst, fun and exciting plot were actually always fading to black when hardcore sex scenes would have been included by more explicit writers.

As a reader, it happens quite often that I skip the sex scenes -if written by someone who just is no good at it. Which happens a lot more often than you'd think, since there is a vast gap between people capable or interested in writing sex scenes and people capable of writing sexy, hot scenes.

I didn't think bizarro fiction was inherently sexual...? Or has the genre changed since I last checked? I'm not into it so maybe I'm missing something here.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Been a few years since I've read any, too. Maybe the stuff I liked stuck with me and the sex stuff didn't? Or the over-sexualization of everything has taken over and there's no real bizarro fic left to be found? IDK.

Er, I read mostly New Wave spec fic growing up. Didn't like the bizarro stuff till I was older, but appreciated it more then. Glad I got out of reading it, if it turned into a lot of diFilippo-style stuff. Gross.

Yeah, I'm confused by OP's definition of bizarro fiction. Maybe the landscape has shifted since I looked into it so that it's dominated by sexual stuff now? I hope not. That would be pretty limiting and this genre is supposed to be all about strange and unexpected.

I know nothing about the genre, but I'm confused by "I think I'd be good at this" in the same secret as "I can't abide a large component of it [as I understand it]"...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
All the stories in the genre I've read lately have either been overtly sexual, or had some serious overtones of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds awful, narrow, and limited. Definitely NOT what bizarro fic should be! :-(

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, they've been very varied in the usage of the sexual stuff, but it's still been a major part of my impression of the genre so far. It's a good thing I like almost everything else about bizarro fiction.

Just write something without sex in it? Odds are, there are others out there who would appreciate it either because they don't care for sex in this genre either, or because good writing is good writing, regardless.

I've written morbid stories before with zero sex in it before. Not because I oppose it, but because it didn't fit that story/character.

Write what you like, OP. If anything, writing in a specific niche might set you apart.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Write bizarro shit in which sex is disturbing and gross? Some people are probably into this kind of stuff.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking! Use your horror and squick in your work! Make other people see something they view as normal or desirable in a new and disturbing way.

There are Asexuals who write porn. And if sex truly is a requirement of Bizarro fictions (which it doesn't seem to be) you can break the boundaries of the genre!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I suspect a surprisingly high proportion of fanfic writers are, more than the population average I mean. I remember reading some meta by a very prolific writer who explained that it was precisely why she wrote slash fanfiction (because it was completely removed from her real life).
