I didn't find him particularly annoying. The first season plots are so far fetched and Wesley's so Mary Sueish (or Marty Sueish), that I couldn't take it seriously, so I wasn't annoyed with him.
Well, after all the feats he'd done, Picard had no other choice but apreciate Wesley.

His personality seems a bit lacking. No hobbies, no personal quirks. And his relationship with Beverly wasn't focused on. I liked the bits where Picard was supportive, so I somewhat get OP's meaning.
