because female characters = relatable, cool. male characters = hot, lust-worthy, inspires all the fanfic.
naw, I'm not excluding bi girls, and of course I'm generalizing. but as a girl attracted to girls I love to read fic of women too, of which there is a very small amount, and I feel like it's because I'm surrounded by straight girls in love with the "tortured abs" male characters, and who want to read and write fic about them. and in my experience the fandoms with the most femmeslash and female-centred fic always have the most bi and gay girls, so.

IA that bi/gay girls are in general more interested in fic about women- I didn't realize that's what you were referring to!

If interested: I meant more about the specific interest in torture and crying and lack of investment in char growth for men. Reading about someone I ID with being miserable and in pain is awful, so I don't get the appeal. I figure it's about how big a part gender plays in my interest in a character (not much for me, I think) and I don't think sexual orientation is the only factor there. In fact, I'm sure there are lesbian slash authors who tend to marginalize women and woobify their fave.

yes, I'm referring to the fanfic part. I think orientation plays a big role. not the only role, but a substantial role for a majority of fans. you're not attracted to the female character, so you enjoy the character through relating to them and being interested in their character growth. but you're attracted to the male character, so you want to write and read the smut fic feautring them, and enjoy thinking about them being pretty and vulnerable. that's what I pick up from my straight female friends when they fangirl over characters like Tony Stark and Loki at least, idk.
