Plus comments are your comments, the author's comments, and any subsequent comments you make as well. Kudos are KUDOS, only one reader can make them. So it's a lot more indicative at a glance of how popular a fic is, that someone read it and liked it enough to give it kudos, even if they didn't know how to comment without keyboard smashing.

Sure, tons of authors would probably prefer comments to kudos, because we like getting feedback (I love hearing which lines resonated with readers), but someone took time out of their day to read your fic and tell you, "Yes, you did a good thing; I will help make that more obvious at a glance".

'Someone took time out of their day to read your fic'? Oh, I'm sorry it was such a chore! Silly me who thought you read fic because you enjoy a show, book or movie.
Could we stop acting as if readers were doing authors a favor when reading their stories, please?

NAYRT

Why do I feel like this comment was put in the wrong place? It seems like a weird response to the parent comment (which I don't recall showing the majority of the text shown here).

This was a response / knee jerk reaction to the Someone took time out of their day to read your fic part, which is in the parent comment.

Easy there, anon. No need to be hostile. I asked because I read the parent comments five times and didn't see that quote or anything that implied the thought presented.

Could we stop acting as if readers were doing authors a favor when reading their stories, please?

But what if the author truly believes that to be the case?

Not everybody thinks that they are owed a readership. Some are truly, genuinely surprised to find others reading and liking their work. I know I'm one of them. I wrote it for me, posted it in the off chance someone else might like it.. oh lookie there! I've made some very good friends that way.

So yes, my readers are doing me a favor, reading my fic when there are thousands of others out there they could be reading instead.

There are ten trillion things I want to read or could be reading, never mind all the non-reading stuff I should be doing. I chose to devote the time to read something you wrote and published, presumably, in the hopes of finding readers. Thank you, and you're welcome.
