Yes: and why is it we cannot have nice things?

Because when you've been in fandom long enough, you run into writers who get irate that your comment was a mere 'I loved it' hit and run type since they would apparently prefer long, detailed, erudite praise instead.

Actually, I have seen also lots of writers who hate positive comments which detail one part of their story which is not THEIR own favorite part.

It's a cycle: you see it in every fandom: diva authors and unfortunately it's not always easy to tell in advance which is which until you get a truly nasty reply to one of your positive comments...

Which is why I only leave anon kudos, never comments. Ever: it was a long an painful lesson, but I have learned it over years of reading fanfic. Am I saying such writers should be stomped on hard? No: it's their work, they are allowed to have their own opinion, but in self-defense I have learned to never comment.

PS; And oh yes, said writers who run it for everyone else? Are quite often the same ones who are the most vocal in begging for comments and feedback.

Also, on a completely unrelated topic, I like your fics! Keep up the good work... :D

I've left quite a lot of comments in my time, but I can't say anyone's ever responded to a positive comment with HDU. Still, I've only been in for fandom for 10 years and I'm not denying your reality. I imagine that would suck, getting your kindness treated by a slap in the face.

And if you've been burned over and over, I can see making a call not to comment anymore. But as a general philosophy, I don't think that's why so many people kudos more often than commenting.
