Relax. You're not hurting anyone.

I mean, it isn't like you are plagiarizing stuff. You are just daydreaming while using plots from other people. This is what 80% of my fandom daydreams are. Me taking a story I like and changing things I don't (characters, plot points, decisions by characters, etc.). I doubt it is that odd.

I mean hell, fanfiction is literally taking the original things and changing the characters/plot points/decisions.

Exactly this.

Pretty much. As long as you aren't seeking accolades based on other people's work, I say you're golden. ^_^

That's not even a little bit skeevy. It's in your head, and you're enjoying fandom the way you want to.

Hell, I used to rewrite other people's fanfiction of my own OTPs just because I thought the stories had potential but weren't executed to my liking. Then I'd reread and feel smug but it's all in the privacy of my asshattery so who cares?

Don't worry, man. As long as you're not going around telling people off because they're not writing your OTP, then no harm, no foul.

Hopefully this'll make you feel better: I have a few characters that I'm really attached to. I'm so attached to them, in fact, that I will sometimes mentally replace characters that I like in other canons with them.

So, at the very least, there's someone out there who's far, far more skeevy than you. ;)

Nah, it's not skeevy. It's in your own head, you aren't flaming anyone for shipping something other than your OTP, you aren't reposting the same story with only minor changes, etc. You're fine and shouldn't feel guilty over it.

I'm pretty sure just about everyone does that OP. Nothing to feel bad about.

It sucks so much when the popular pairing overshadows your otp with one of the same characters.

I don't think fantasizing is skeevy and I doubt sharing your stuff for the pairing would be skeevy unless it borrows too heavily from someone else's specific story. As far as I'm concerned, general AU ideas are up for grabs.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed with everybody else. As long as you're not ripping off somebody else's stuff and posting it as your own, fantasizing is fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah, I don't see how that's skeevy.

It's not like you're running around the fandom going HEY JERKS THIS STORYLINE WOULD WORK WAAAAAAAAY BETTER WITH MY OTP BECAUSE THE FANDOM FAVORITE IS TOTALLY OVERRATED AND OVERDONE, BUT HEY, KEEP WRITING YOUR STORIES BECAUSE I PRINT THEM OUT AND THEN READ THEM LATE AT NIGHT *licking lips* or anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
In agreement. You're not hurting anything. I change things sometimes, too. Often without even knowing I'm doing it, my brain will just "rewrite" a sentence in my head if it's in a fic I like. Or I'll randomly change character dialogue that I think is OOC.

Totally without thought. Which makes me confused when I go read the fics later and think for a minute that they aren't what I thought they were. :D

Sorry you can't find fic for your OTP, btw. It's always terrible when that happens! *hugs*

TBH, I do the exact same thing. The way I see it fandom is suppose to just be a fun escape so I can daydream the way things I want to be to my hearts content.

As long as your not stealing/altering then posting other peoples stuff I say go ahead and imagine things the way you want them.

Also, most fandom interpretation of characters is altered from their canon counterparts so I don't see the harm in just imagining them as your preferred character instead.

What everyone else said. Lots of people do it.

At the moment, I'm reading an epic fanfic and mentally replacing all the badly spelled words. There is no way I'd get through it otherwise.

I came across some 'unfortunate security breeches' and laughed for about two days, so I don't replace all the time. I think at one point another character began to 'loose his head'. Again, too good to change.

I have considered re-writing whole fanfics properly, for myself, but as you said, that feels skeevy.

I don't think I've mentally replaced characters in a fanfic for shipping purposes, but I do a similar thing for RL media. When I watch anything on television with Mark Heap in it, I mentally replace him with Julian Barratt. Barratt was apparently the original choice for Heap's role in Spaced and since then it's a compulsion, even though I love Mark Heap's acting and he's pretty hot as well.

Here it is. It was recced by someone else on fs.

It's Loki that I'm imagining wearing those unfortunate security breeches. I want art so much.

Oh look, I actually have that on my "To read" list since it was recced here the other day. Well now. I'll be looking out for those breeches!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to read that fic XD

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend once sent me a fic to read from a fandom I'm not in, because said fic contained a lot of tropes and things we both enjoy. I tried reading it but it just felt too stupid to get into (it was RPF and OOC and generally laughable).

I dumped the fic into Microsoft Word and used find/replace to transform everyone into my OTP and fandom-appropriate characters and... I read it and gobbled up every bit and was able to discuss it with them like 'boom' it went from being 'nope' to being 'yes yes okay' just like that.

I still feel like a weirdo from doing that, but I'm often tempted to do it again.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I need to try that. Thank you.
