Solar Freakin' Roadways!

I just really like this video.

I love the idea presented, especially the whole melting the snow part. I'm not sure how actually doable the idea is on a country wide scale though.(Especially when here in the US we are abound to get very loud group of "IT'S GONNA DESTROY 'MURICA!" people who will go straight to fear mongering, without bothering with those pesky research, and fact things.) To me that's all the more reason to go out there get started, and find out what will and won't work, and see how far this can be taken.

I admit I was kinda excited to go to the Indiegogo site and see that had gotten all the donations they had asked for with 6(now 5.) days left for funding.

The advertising style in the video was really off-putting to me.

I'm kind of concerned on how the panels will be controlled, because mismanagement would be really bad. And how road management job will be affected after the installation period. But otherwise, I'm okay with it.

My main concern is that the panels will get pried up and stolen, and on a routine basis at that. I mean, it's a sweet idea, and maybe I'm just being cynical, but humans are assholes and I'm not sure we've got the resources to keep up with that.

Or that they are simply not as sturdy to take heavy traffic every day. f you'd need to change them every 3 yeas, it becomes less interesting, sadly.

They've had them stress tested by engineers and have given a lifespan of about 20 years, and that's because of the solar cell, not the durability of the panels themselves.

They actually mention in their FAQ that the individual panels will have GPS, for both being able to accurate locate a malfunctioning one... and for being able to track down one that gets stolen.

ahhhh, such a cool vid! Thanks for sharing! (and amusing, I like the way the vid was done)

As for all the naysayers: I think it's important to consider all sides and all drawbacks and address them, but just because it needs to be worked on doesn't make this a bad idea. I think it's a really good idea. And there were lots of naysayers to technologies in our past that we take for granted now (like flight, for instance). Bright people will keep working on this and I hope one day it's a reality.

Exactly. No one can know just how far this will be able to go unless people start working with this out in real world, and find out what its strengths and limitations are.

Every idea has it's problems, and if we want to get anywhere with anything what we need to do if work harder and find a way to fix those problems.

As a trucker, I freakin' ADORE the idea of roads that would never get ice and snow on them. That alone would be worth the price of admission. My life would be soooo much easier!

That said, I always get really annoyed when people try to sell something on the idea that "it will create jobs!!!!" Especially since I doubt it actually would. Sure it will create jobs for whoever builds, installs, and maintains the solar roadways, but what about all the jobs of asphalt/concrete manufacturers, paving companies, hell what about the snowplow and salt truck drivers? If it did actually take off it would probably represent a net decrease in jobs. Which isn't even necessarily a bad thing, it just bugs me so much that they most likely didn't take any of that into account. /end rant

I don't think the problem will necessarily be a decrease in jobs, I it will be more people being displaced if their jobs are made obsolete, and may just not fit into the new jobs opened up by doing this. But yeah, despite what the video says the job thing is a very legitimate concern.

This is one of my favorite things about the idea. Think of how many lives that alone would save. Just replacing sidewalks with those would make things so much safer.

Re: Solar Freakin' Roadways!

[personal profile] riddian 2014-05-27 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's it exactly. Some jobs could transfer over pretty easily, but if you are some construction worker who has specialized knowledge in how to pour and grade asphalt, that doesn't translate too well to servicing solar panels and electrical systems. So the feeling of false advertising there bothers me.

I do think that the amount of lives saved and injuries avoided is worth more than some lost jobs though. I always see so many more accidents in winter time. I'm sure emergency responders wouldn't mind being a little less needed!

I think that some of those jobs would still transfer over into other kinds of construction, and if they make the effort to funnel those people into training (hopefully subsidized) that will give them the skills to help build the new roadways....

I mean, i 100 percent understand your concern, but I also couldn't justify *not* moving forward on something like this because 'some jobs' will be lost. Some jobs were lost when people stopped using horse and buggy, but nobody wants to go back to those days.

Yeah, like I said I think it's worth it! It's the deceptive feeling I get from people pushing for something on the premise that it "creates jobs" that I have trouble with.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-05-27 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, but...it's not deceptive. It *will* create jobs. They just don't talk about the jobs lost, but that's understandable.

LOL, it's because I understand exactly why they'd leave it out that it feels so deceptive.

I loved that video but I still think that it is not as practical and useful as they try to make it sound. The LEDs are especially off-putting to me - they have to be controlled over some sort of computer and once that gets hacked, there is a lot that could go wrong. Also light pollution. I also don't think that the stress tests really mirror the reality and I also don't know how the material would work on the passing vehicles' traction and all.
I do think that it would be a good way to use normally unused spaces, like ware house roofs or even parking lots. But I don't think paving actual streets with that stuff would be very wise. I imagine maintenance for these things to be incredibly expensive.
