Re: What's your favourite gun?
(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)I deeply love the novel Lolita, and in it, Humbert lovingly describes the handgun he keeps stashed during his endless, insane road trip with Lo: "There, snugly wrapped in a white woolen scarf, lay a pocket automatic: caliber .32, capacity of magazine 8 cartridges, length a little under one ninth of Lolita's length, stock checked walnut, finish full blued."
Connoisseurs will instantly recognize the justly-legendary Colt model 1903 Pocket Hammerless (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Colt_Model_1903/1908). So a couple years ago, I managed to acquire that exact model. In fact, researching the serial number on mine, I discovered that it was from the same year as the one in the novel. It turns out you can buy vintage ammo if you poke around.
Long story short: if you go to my bookshelf and pick up a certain copy of Lolita, you will open it to find, in a hidden recess lined with white woolen felt, the exact gun with which Humbert Humbert killed Clare Quilty, loaded with the exact ammunition he bought for that purpose in autumn 1952. It is the most perfectly realized version of Chum (Humbert's name for the gun) that has ever existed in reality.
I can literally reach into a work of fiction and pull a weapon out into the real world.
