Re: Rules of Fandom/Fanfiction

Here are some general ones which I think apply across most of fanficcy fandom:

1. Don't write fic when you haven't read/watched the canon (or at least don't admit it)
2. Don't make fun of teenagers in your fandom (if their age is that obvious) - you'll look like a dick no matter how annoying they are
3. Don't tell actors/writers about fanfic/fandom. This used to be a big one but more and more young 'uns (and actors/writers) themselves are crossing this line on twitter/tumblr. As such, for this rule I would say 'watch this space'
4. Don't tell actors/writers about your fandom porn. This rule still applies and I think will always apply
5. Don't try to make money from fandom - especially not from fanfic. *insert fanfic vs fanart commission debate here*
6. Don't plagiarise: fandom never forgets. You know who I'm talking about.
7. Try to minimise expressing your thoughts on yaoi.
8. If you must express your thoughts on yaoi and end up writing an academic article/book about it, prepare to have half of fandom accusing you of breaking rule 3. and the other half vehemently and frighteningly articulately disagreeing with you. I.e. don't try to outsmart fandom.
9. Never underestimate fandom's dumb either: ship wars *head desk*
10. Don't take yourself or fandom too seriously, because otherwise you will go mad and/or marry Snape on an astral plane.

Ugh, when I was a teen in fandom I hated that. Of course I can now see the flip side, being the adult - sometimes teenagers in fandom are so annoying, even the ones who clearly do mean well. But then I remember that I was probably a bit annoying too, except being a kid, I didn't know it. So there's that. Plus, some of the adults I know in fandom are even worse.
