Yeah, let's forget that this sheltered girl with major anxiety problems didn't just get the shit knocked out of her by her dad when she thought he would never harm her in a million years when she was told to do the simple non-zombie-related task. Yeah.

I'm sick of people acting like every character needs to be this hardcore bad ass and just get over their issues with a snap of their fingers. Being unable to function is unrealistic? Making mistake after mistake is unrealistic? Being depressed is unrealistic? Okay. Getting on a child's case for being unable to deal with reality during a zombie apocolypse bullshit scenerio is great.

Not every child can be a carbon copy of clementine.

None of those things is unrealistic. What is unrealistic is someone who can't function and who doesn't learn from their mistakes surviving in an apocalyptic situation.

Those of us who have really bad anxiety and depression and struggle to handle difficult situations would not survive. It really sucks to think about, and it's the real reason I find post-apocalyptic stuff terrifying, to be honest -- I know I wouldn't make it. I know I couldn't make it.

On top of that, though, having a character in fiction with those kinds of issues wind up driving plot through bad choices isn't very good writing. The character comes across less like a person and more like a device.

the only reason she's survived so far is because of her father, not because of her inability to function or learn from her mistakes. that is the only reason she hasn't died or been hurt severely. with her father now dead, that may change.

if you had an over-protective family member always watching you/keeping you away from danger and never letting you know what was going on, you'd probably survive a while. like sarah has.

a plot can't be driven by bad choices? ever? i disagree greatly with what you're saying here.
