Because people are human beings and respond to things emotionally even when that's not a useful thing to do? Because emotion isn't logic? Because getting invested in things that we can't affect is something that happens to all of us? Because they have empathy and enter into what happened and feel on behalf of the victims, or fear that something similar could happen to them? What?
