What is your ramen style FS?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the subject line says. How do you cook your cheap but filling noodles? Do you add to the provided spice/veggie packets, or throw them out? Egg, meat, onion, what do you add? Favourite brand? Favourite flavours?

For me, it's got to be Mr. Noodle in the square packs, and I'll eat them a whole variety of ways...including crushed up, with the spice mixture dusted over the top, dry, like chips or popcorn. Very very very very unhealthy popcorn, but eh.

Maruchan. Raw.

Me too! I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

Mr. Noodle is our brand (don't get Maruchan here). Do you sprinkle the seasoning on top, or not?

If we're talking cheap ramen, I usually try to get the spicy kind (tantan-men flavor) if it's around. I leave everything in. If not... I used to like the chicken flavor alright, but I kind of burnt myself out on it.

If we're talking quick and easy, I'll usually do Maruchan, microwaved with about half the spice packet. If I have leftover meat, sometimes I'll add that, and if I feel like I have time and the goods, I'll just heat up the noodles and do a stir-fry with meat, broccoli, mushrooms and onion, seasoned with a little soy sauce, and maybe a light sprinkle of the powder packet.

If my noodles are beef, pork or "oriental" flavor, I'm not picky about the sort of meat I put into it, be it steak, chicken, pork or -- if I have it -- shrimp. But the chicken noodles (especially the creamy chicken) can only be chicken.

Drain, chill, add corn and shrimp, toss with a vinaigrette made of whatever flavorings sound good right now.

I buy Maruchan. I break up the noodles first, cook, then I drain almost all the water before adding the flavor packet.

Oh thank fuck, other people who eat it raw! Everyone I knew seemed to do this as a kid, but now in college no one has ever heard about! I do the whole sprinkle-on-the-spice-and-eat-it-raw thing all the time.

That said, I usually only use a little bit of the spice. Then I save the rest of the spice. When I want to eat noodles at school, I'll dice-up and fry some tofu in the ramen spice at home and take it in a little zip-loc back to school, where/on the way to which I'll pick up a Cup-o-Noodle of the matching flavor (usually chicken). I'll dump the tofu into the cup, the hot water, and boom, healthy (or less unhealthy, at least) lunch! :) Also applicable with actual chicken/meat, and mushrooms. :D

Step 1 for all:Boil the noodles plain, and pour cold water over them until they are cold.

Variation 1: Soup.
Add hot water to the soup powder, in a bowel, put noodles in and add vegetables. They are PERFECT slurping temperature.

Varation 2: Fried
Fry onions and whatever else in butter. When soft, add the noodles and the powder. This is also the stage to add an egg.

I haven't had them in a long time, but I would use Maruchan. Throw out the spice packet, break up the noodles and pan fry it along with pork or chicken and some sort of sauce. It's been over 10 years so I don't remember what exactly I used, but that's the gist of it.

I add anything provided, but don't usually put eggs or meat in it.

I only put on a little bit of hot water and eat them crispy.

Boil them like pasta, two square packs at a time (ugh yes I know so awful), drain the water, mix them up with 1 flavor packet (shrimp or oriental) and some Parmesan cheese.

Yes, I'm strange. But it is delicious.

Maruchan preferred, but I really don't think there's THAT much of a difference between it and Top Ramen.

I'll eat it raw if I'm super lazy, but usually I take the plain noodles out of the packet, toss it in a slightly larger than normal bowl (usually a small/mid-sized cooking bowl), fill it up with water until the whole thing can submerge itself, and then I toss it into the microwave for 5 min.

When it's done, I use a pair of oven mitts to grab it and pour out the excess water. Then I toss in two ice cubes and the seasoning packet and I'm good to go!

Maruchan with an egg, either hard boiled or just dropped in the boiling water before the noodles and then some toast on the side.

I like to cook it and then drain most of the water and then add in the packaged seasoning. Very little water is the key and the best that there is.

Instant ramen is my life, lol. I think I was raised on Sapporo Ichiban. I like eating it with the broth and putting in soy sauce and pickled plums. I also love Shin Ramyun, it is the best thing ever.

I used to eat them raw, crushed, and with the flavour sprinkled on as well! :D Everyone in my family thought it was seriously weird, heh.

I don't eat them any more, largely because not a lot of brands are vegan and the ones that are are generally the flavours I don't like, but I do something similar with packets of plain popcorn and chicken-style stock powder.

We usually buy chicken flavor because that's one of the flavors you can get in bulk pretty easily. I cook it until the noodles are mostly soft, drain almost all the water off, add butter and frozen mixed vegetables, heat it back up and add the flavor packet. Sometimes I drizzle a little sesame oil over it.

I don't buy the kind in the Styrofoam cup because you're not supposed to nuke the cup.

My favorite kind is Top Ramen, but Maruchan is an acceptable substitute.

I can't name the brand I buy, it's one from the Asian imports section of the supermarket because I have grown to dislike the flavour of the big-named brands like Maggi, or store no-name label noodles. If I go into the city and visit the Asian supermarket there, I can get a few more flavours besides chicken and beef (I don't get the beef one), and it's usually cheaper per packet too (Coles sells them for around $1.20, while the asian market has them for 70c).

I put the dry noodles in a bowl, dump the soup powder and sesame oil on top, and a teaspoon of stock powder from my can of Massel (Aussie brand of stock), then pour over freshly boiled water and let it sit for a few minutes until the noodles are soft. Then I drain it and usually reserve the stock liquid for use in future cooking, because I don't want to waste the flavour I buy that brand of noodles for.

What I do after? Most of the time I just eat it just like that, though I will sometimes make the noodles up to have with other stuff as well.
