Coming from a similar standpoint, I generally agree (though of course it depends on the person). However, I'd add that it may depend on the frequency of the topic? Mentioning it occasionally probably wouldn't be a big deal, but if it comes up quite often, they might start to get annoyed. Of course they're aware it's not your fault they don't have food, but still.
