I didn't recognize him either. I really don't care about most celebs. I'm not mad, just...why are people so invested in this?

Maybe it's an age/generational thing. It might be that people over 30 think "how the hell can you not recognize one of the highest-paid, most award-winning actors ever"? He's won 2 best actor Oscars and 3 best actor Golden Globes, but both of the Oscars were nearly 20 years ago.

Maybe, but if you asked me who the most popular actors of my generation are, I couldn't say. I could maybe make some wild guesses, but I could not say for sure because I just don't really follow this stuff.

Sorry, I didn't have a chance to come back in last night after you replied. I was a junior/senior in high school when Tom Hanks won his Oscars (as I said, about 20 years ago). Growing up at that time, there was SO much less media. I didn't even have email in high school, and was half-way through college before I saw something resembling what the World Wide Web is today. Long story short, I do think it's generational. There's no way anyone I went to school with didn't know who Tom Hanks was. We all watched the same stuff, because there was nothing else. Maybe 3-4 big movies out at a time (a "time" being, I don't know, at least a month before something new came out.) So we had more of a shared experience of the entertainment world. In the modern world of infinite variety, sure, I can get that you don't know who the big Hollywood stars are. Growing up at that time, unless you were Amish or lived under a rock, there was absolutely no way you wouldn't have known.

I'm 40 and have watched lots of Tom Hanks movies but I didn't recognise him in that fic.
