Recently there was this shitty post about "not men are dangerous", with an analogy about M&M's. Well: so what if only 10 percent of men are violent? Imagine in 10 percent of your M&M's were poison - go on, eat handful.

The same "logic" could be applied toward women. Women can be dangerous, too. To other women (who I'm assuming this message is aimed at), children and even men. So I guess you shouldn't "eat a handful" there, either.

lmao. Except statistically, women are a lot more likely to be sexually harassed or assaulted by men which is the point of this whole thing. It's societal thing. It's not even just about one man or one woman. It's about men as a part of society.

Well, firstly because to begin with that statistic is made up on the spot.

Secondly, that would imply that "bad men" and "good men" are somehow evenly distributed at the 1/9 ratio every day or every hour of your life.

This is untrue. I grew up with good men. I went to school with mostly good men. I am friends with good men. I have come across bad men, but they are rare in my life. And, on the other spectrum sadly there are people who grow up with a lot of bad men, in abusive homes. But not everyone at every time is evenly at danger from bad men - while they would be with your M&M"s scenario.

Thirdly, even if the logic would work, it's a horrible world view. It's basically saying: fear/distrust/avoid all men just to be sure, because a minority are bad and you never know. Replace "men" with "blacks" or "gays" and you can see how warped that logic is.

That's not how I want to live. That's not what I think a healthy attitude towards life is. Be aware of the fact that every person you do not know is unpredictable and might not have good intentions, sure. But don't create an atmosphere of fear between men and women - that's beneficial to no-one.

Funny, because as soon as I hear the NOT ALL MEN phrase, I tune out. It's like g8 b8 or TROLL!!! whatever. It shows you can't reason beyond tired phrases.

Not really, since not every handful of M&Ms is guaranteed to have poison in them. Some handfuls will be perfectly fine, there's even a chance that every handful up until the end of the bowl will be fine, just like some people are blessed to be dealing with only good men over the course of their entire lives. But all it takes is one bad M&M to get people killed. And while you're right in that it's not good to live in absolute dysfunctional terror of those few bad M&Ms, it's also not good to ignore the very real and dangerous existence of them. Fear and caution are two different things, and that's what the analogy is trying to say, to me: That women shouldn't be shamed for reasonable caution of a real threat.

But people do shame women for caution - especially guys who feel entitled to a chance, and then shame women yet again when things go badly for a woman because she gave the wrong guy a chance. Women are expected to psychically be able to tell good guys from bad, the good candy from the poison, and the analogy is trying to express how impossible that is, how all the M&Ms look the same, and how women shouldn't be treated as paranoid just for being wary of landing that one disastrously bad piece.

I dunno, over the course of my life I've actually been pretty damn good at identifying the people who would genuinely wish me harm.

I'm not saying it's a fool-proof system, but it's not totally random either.

Those posts aren't saying "therefore you must/should feel this way toward all men." They're trying to explain why some people feel that way. I agree it would be annoying if people insisted you have to feel afraid of all men. But it's equally annoying when people say that no women should be extra cautious or fearful of men as a group. There are legit reasons to do so. It doesn't mean that everyone has to feel that way. And obviously everyone's life circumstances are different.

Well, fair enough if that's the case - but that's the problem with the whole tumblr format and taking those quotes out of context. You get one-liner quotes like that and interpretation is up to you.

In the context you say, that analogy can be an illustration. In itself, it just seems to be saying "never trust any men because some of them might hurt you".

Here's the point. The point is that it doesn't MATTER that "not all men" are ______. The point is that ENOUGH men are that women aren't wrong to be wary of men as a whole.

And also if your response (the general you) to a woman sharing a personal story or experience of sexual harassment and assault and expressing anti-male sentiment is to be like "well not all men!" then shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down and stop making everything about you.

For the record I agree with you, and I think it's a dumb concept. I mean, (bullshit statistic time) 10% of all black men are in jail for commuting a violent crime, that makes them "poisoned M&M's" right? Time to avoid all black men right?

Or how about 10% of all women kill children, that means that all women are dangerous to children, and they shouldn't be around them, right?

Well lately it has been stupid "Not all men" posts/jokes. So now it is blacklisted. Generally it goes in waves. For a while there I had to blacklist Laverne Cox because of some blowout concerning her and some magazine. She is now unblocked because Tumblr has an attention span of 10 days.
