(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)Basically? That evil people are like everyone else - just extra selfish. Not in a "SELFISHNESS IS THE WORST TRAIT EVAR!" way, but more of a "What I want/how I want to do it means more to me than how it effects other people". The whole plot kind of revolves around it since the evil people are saving the world from good* because they don't want to become good.
There is a better example in the book itself [actually, two] but...they're kind of spoilers so I don't know if you'd care to hear them.
*too much good = world comes unbalanced and ends, which is made clear very early on

And if you don't have any of that selfish impulse, you can't defend or care for yourself, so that's another interesting twist.
