(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)I don't get it, OP. So what if they think fandom is more important than you, yourself, think? They're still doing us a service. They can be as fandom-orientated as they want, I'm still going to be grateful for the existence of AO3.

I never knew they ran fanlore! You discover something new every day.

Also, what's wrong with people being dedicated to Fandom? Fandom is meant for fun, and people who are dedicated to it help make it fun. I for one am happy there are people running AO3.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)So much fannish material has been lost due to site closures, rapidly aging technology, the death of the fanzine, etc.
I like that they not only are willing to go to bat to defend the right of fans to make things like fanfiction, fanart, and fanvids, but AO3 is the only place that I feel safe and secure that they won't purge my works for being "too explicit", "too controversial", "site mod doesn't like my face", etc.
They may be pretentious, but so am I. I believe that fandom is an important part of human history and should be preserved. I can see where someone who participates in fandom just for giggles wouldn't be so invested, but for others who have incredible memories and take fandom a bit more seriously, it's important.

I absolutely agree. While I feel my fic is safe on the main (small) archive I use, I use AO3 in case anything happens. I also think fandom is important; there's an enormous amount of creativity in it. Fanfic makes up over 60% of my reading these days because it gives me what I want to read.
AO3 are very prompt in responding to their members, too. A friend of mine had a bit of trouble there (dogpiling) and contacted them. They got back to her very quickly, and sorted it out. They take fandom seriously, and so do I. It's actually good to see people who do take it seriously.

What the OP perceives as pretentiousness is, I think, just the sense of mission, which necessary for the aim of the organization: the preservation of fandom and its works. So yeah, the OTW thinks fandom is important. People have lost their jobs because of fandom, they have had their zines ripped from their hands and torn up at Kinkos, they have been sent legal threats and all sorts of bad shit. So, frankly I'm glad someone with legal skills is taking it to the courts, is preserving it with Fanlore and elsewhere, and has it backed up six ways from Sunday on the Archive, as well.
Disclaimer: It's why I spent 4.5 years as a Systems volunteer.
