And they are...?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW). They run AO3.

I was wondering why the logo looked familiar. Thanks, anon.

They're not out there shoving pamphlets in your face. They do run a non-profit organisation that supports fans in a variety of ways though, not least AO3.

I don't get it, OP. So what if they think fandom is more important than you, yourself, think? They're still doing us a service. They can be as fandom-orientated as they want, I'm still going to be grateful for the existence of AO3.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that they're annoyingly pretentious, but I don't think they think fandom is the most important thing ever. But I mean, they're a fandom nonprofit. Of course their focus is going to be on fandom. That's what the organization exists for.

Everything I hear about these people makes me glad I never have to see them. No one seems to like them for reasons unknown to me. I just use their shit.

I have no idea what goes on with AO3 beyond 'there's a shitload of fic there', but I am grateful for that. If that's what they're passionate about (and it would have to be, to run a site like that, right?) more power to them.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
They do other stuff, too: https://transformativeworks.org/our-projects

The legal advocacy in particular I think is fantastic; that and AO3 are tied for my favorite thing the OTW does.

Ooo, that's cool. Why is this a bad thing? I think it's great that someone cares about legal advocacy.

I never knew they ran fanlore! You discover something new every day.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, oh well. I just use AO3 for posting/reading fic so I don't really care about the people behind it and how obsessed they are about fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
of course they talk like fandom is important? I think that's the bare minimum when speaking on behalf of an org run off of donations. you sound young tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
oh no, the people running a fanfic archive think fandom is super important??

uh-oh spaghettio

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Well I am glad they exist because AO3. That is enough reason for me to put up with any pretentiousness they might have.

Also, what's wrong with people being dedicated to Fandom? Fandom is meant for fun, and people who are dedicated to it help make it fun. I for one am happy there are people running AO3.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just gonna assume you're new here and don't remember the years of S&D orders for posting fic. Must be nice, young one. Must be nice.

I've been in fandoms for roughly 30 years.

So much fannish material has been lost due to site closures, rapidly aging technology, the death of the fanzine, etc.

I like that they not only are willing to go to bat to defend the right of fans to make things like fanfiction, fanart, and fanvids, but AO3 is the only place that I feel safe and secure that they won't purge my works for being "too explicit", "too controversial", "site mod doesn't like my face", etc.

They may be pretentious, but so am I. I believe that fandom is an important part of human history and should be preserved. I can see where someone who participates in fandom just for giggles wouldn't be so invested, but for others who have incredible memories and take fandom a bit more seriously, it's important.

I absolutely agree. While I feel my fic is safe on the main (small) archive I use, I use AO3 in case anything happens. I also think fandom is important; there's an enormous amount of creativity in it. Fanfic makes up over 60% of my reading these days because it gives me what I want to read.

AO3 are very prompt in responding to their members, too. A friend of mine had a bit of trouble there (dogpiling) and contacted them. They got back to her very quickly, and sorted it out. They take fandom seriously, and so do I. It's actually good to see people who do take it seriously.

+a million.

What the OP perceives as pretentiousness is, I think, just the sense of mission, which necessary for the aim of the organization: the preservation of fandom and its works. So yeah, the OTW thinks fandom is important. People have lost their jobs because of fandom, they have had their zines ripped from their hands and torn up at Kinkos, they have been sent legal threats and all sorts of bad shit. So, frankly I'm glad someone with legal skills is taking it to the courts, is preserving it with Fanlore and elsewhere, and has it backed up six ways from Sunday on the Archive, as well.

Disclaimer: It's why I spent 4.5 years as a Systems volunteer.
