For a given definition of "better." It's still television.

Oh, come on. It's better in that it is attracting some real talent. It used to be television was this thing and movies are this thing with television being a lower form. You had TV actors and you movie actors. And you had TV directors/producers and movie directors/producers. But in the last couple of years, that has been all but erased. A-List actors like Halle Berry and Matthew Mcconaughey are popping up on television without a worry that they may ruin their movie careers. Well known directors are like Guillermo del Toro and David Fincher are doing shows (though Fincher's is on netflix. But I still count it as a television show since it is serial.)

It's a free for all now. People are writing for both television and movies.

See, that's just it. TV has certainly diversified, its production quality and the kind of status it bestows on actors has gone up, but that doesn't make it any better. The really popular shows are mediocre at best, and they get put on a pedestal and everyone talks about how great it is that they're not CSI clones but that is literally their only distinguishing feature -- that they're not something else. They're still formulaic, unevenly written and acted, and these days there's a trend towards being "edgy" that has persisted across the entire band.

I'm not going to argue that TV in any other decade was inherently better (that's categorically untrue) and I'm certainly not asking for shows to be perfect (we already have the first three seasons of Batman: The Animated Series, you can't improve on that.) But I am asking for shows to be interesting and right now it's just 57 channels of cringe.
