I never heard anything about a pay issue. But he was pretty public (which later after returning to the show he said he regretted) about not being happy with the direction of his character in seasons four and five, and I think somewhere in there IIRC he took a swipe at the Sam/Jack ship, which earned him the eternal ire of the Sam/Jack fanbase.

The odd thing is that, at least from where I was sitting, he seemed to be more sidelined in seasons seven and eight than he was in four and five. I don't know why he came back - maybe just found out the grass wasn't greener?

Criticizing people's ships was unwise of him. I was sure it was a finacial issue, which often masked by phrases such as "creative disagreements" and such. I heard rumors so I can only speculate on what really happened and what you write also makes sense.
This's his most well known role so it could have played a role in his decision to return.

Yeah, dissing ships is a no - no. That's why Steven Moffat has the entire Rose/Doctor fanbase wanting him to DIAF and why a lot of the Rose/Ten shippers vow to even watch from Eleven onwards until Moffat leaves.

Moffat seems to be rather nice in RL, but the things he says to the fandom... *sigh* I didn't know that he stepped on the toes of the most popular het ship. I'm optimistic about Twelve regardless!

I believe the exact quote, not long after it was announced in '08 that he was taking over was: "You have to hand it to the Doctor for dumping a slightly needy girlfriend by palming her off on a copy of himself. He tried leaving her in a parallel universe, and that didn’t work."

Yeah... Really didn't go down well with the Doctor/Rose fans at all (especially as this was pre - Tennant announcing his departure and the Metacrisis Doctor was still a bit of a wound in some shippers hearts).

That's probably where a lot of the "Moffat is sexist!" ideology originates too.

A needy girlfriend? oO Well, looking at Sherlock and Eleven DW I think Moffat prefers a 'secret spy' type. Thank you for the quote, I'm surprised at the blatantly bad choice of words! Poor Doctor/Rose shippers. Honestly, they have a reason to dislike Moffat era, (to which there's no end in sight, btw).
I remember when Tennant said that he's leaving, I watched it as it aired!
Yes, probably this is the reason. Plus the fact that River Song's life revolved around the Doctor, which is plain strange. Rose has a family and had a boyfriend, all other companions also had their own lifes... As you can see I didn't get into Eleven, maybe I will some day.
