By this point, I'd probably eat the hypothetical handful out of spite. Like, ok, so 10% or whatever are poison... what am I supposed to do? refuse to ever eat an m&m (gag me, it's so dumb even typing it) in my life again? Even though the way we interact with people is in no way similar to the way we eat goddamn candy?

The point of the analogy is not to discourage people, but to explain why some women might be wary of men. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well... that is what a lot of people do, isn't it? They know there's risk involved, but they do it anyway because they don't want to live life avoiding all men (not eating any M&Ms). And the fact is that most of the time, they'll be okay. Just like how most of the M&Ms in the bowl are safe, and you can probably take multiple handfuls without encountering a poison one.

The question of 'do you take a handful?' can have the answer 'yes'. But the point is that you'd probably pause to think before doing so. It's not illogical or wrong for women to hesitate before interacting with men, but they're attacked for being wary.
