It's a gen fic, with the central relationship being friendship, though Kíli is one of the two main characters.
Kíli survives the BoFA, and 78 years later Boromir meets him while on the way to Rivendell. They become friends and Kíli ends up getting involved in the War of the Ring. And that's just the first fic. The whole series is epic, and extremely plotty.
