Why? Competition is a great way to encourage yourself to improve your craft. Competition fuels change and all that.

Agreed. One of the reasons for contests is that they challenge people to push themselves and become better.

Eh, it's helping you draw. I say as long as you just keep it to trying to improve your art then you're okay. Once you start letting it affect your actions towards this person only then do you have a problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfectly put.

(OP, if you look at the history of art or classical music you'll find plenty of artistic rivalries that spurred creativity. The "rival who spurs you to excel" is a time=honored tradition going back to Ancient Greece.)

I could have written this secret except for one thing-- I just get depressed and give up instead of trying to compete

I've given up in the past as well when faced by so many people who are better than me.

I think the OP is using a potentially negative emotion in a really positive way, and I'm impressed.

Ditto! I felt the "art war" feeling but never has anything positive came from it. Kudos, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You seem pretty self aware so you're fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be exactly like this, but then I became really good friends with my "rival" (who is/was a BNF) and now she's one of my closest friends. The competition was really unhealthy for me, and I think it poisoned my work; I was no longer drawing because it was fun and I loved it but because I wanted fame and to beat her at it. Fortunately I got out of that mindset and now I'm a lot better off for it

No worries, OP. You're channeling your possessiveness and competitiveness into something constructive and you're not being a dick about it. So you're good to go!

Reminds me of that time in high school when there were only two of us in PE running a mile. Never before in my life had I ran a mile so fast. We both made some spectacular time, though I fell two seconds behind in the end. Everything in me hurt after that.

Point being, it's quite all right so far as you don't spend too much emotional resources on this competition of yours. Improvement through rivalry is a perfectly normal process; your primary concern should probably be your own welfare.

You are my people.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-31 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This has happened to me more times than I care to admit (though I just give up eventually), so I feel you on this one, OP.

That's a really green eye, is it real or is it enhanced?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty, either way.

It was originally brown. I Photoshopped it.

What's wrong with brown, huh?

Shakespearean allusion, no doubt.

I was going for the green eyes = jealousy angle.

I think eyes like this could be real. I knew a girl who had astoundingly blue eyes - so blue I was startled a little every time I looked at her.

This is a great secret :D Thank you for the irl lols.

Also, if that's what it takes to improve, where the crap is my rival. Actually, I've been craving one for a while, but my competitive streak got shot to hell ages ago :U

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My current major fic-in-progress and two of my pony WIPs are getting new life breathed into them because I discivered that other people have done similar things and done them terribly. No shame in wanting to be better than other creators as long as you're not an ass about it.

Improving due to competitiveness can be incredibly motivating, and it does work. Usually what I do is see where I'm weakest in my art and then compare artists I admire to see how they handle it. So I just pick up various little things from different people.

Just make sure this doesn't become an all-consuming feeling because that wouldn't be healthy.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I don't know, all that "he's mine, he belongs to me" thing sounds really creepy to me. Anyway, you should feel lucky you have an amazing artist drawing your crush.
