On the other hand, I kind of feel like I'd still take a lot of the same precautions if I were male.

There are definitely some avoidance factors even if you're male. I once lived near a bridge that was completely unlit at night, and my roommate told me about a time she was going to cross and had almost left the light when she realized someone was following behind her, trying to look inconspicuous. I'm a lot taller than her, and I've been told I look intimidating, but I wouldn't have crossed that bridge at night if you'd offered me a thousand dollars.

On the other hand, it seemed like my roommate took more precautions than I did, even though she was visibly more muscular than me. And my mother, who's stronger than me but really doesn't look it, won't even park her car far away from the grocery store after dark, because she doesn't want to risk getting mugged in the parking lot.
