Well, to be fair, the reason that's famous is because of how bad it is.

Of course, I suppose it's possible that someone could hear it out of context and go to find it without at all being familiar with fandom...and then thinking "this is the most famous fic in this fandom? What the everloving fuck?".

Nobody is saying "my immortal is the most brilliant fic ever JKR should totally read it for ideas" so I don't think it counts.

Yeah, I think a better example would be "The Draco Trilogy".

Exactly. I do wonder if kids getting into HP fic these days end up reading the same ones everyone was raving about 10 years ago...

But they are saying it for "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" which is one of the most pedantic and overblown fics I've ever attempted to read, I couldn't make it through it. And considering the author's attitude it's just as well.

this is a great example. Interesting idea for MAYBE a 10k story, then I stopped reading.

I couldn't get through the first five chapters. Harry's whole attitude was so damn annoying, and I've read other "Sensible Harry" fics, so it's not the genre that put me off, but that Harry.

Now that I think about it, he makes me think of how annoying canon Hermione is supposed to be, with the whole "I know better than you!" attitude.

But I eventually quit because of the overdone pedantic writing and some rather odd characterization.
