But they are not drawing with it. They literally just take a screenshot, use the eyedropper tool to pick out some colors, and then make little squares under the screenshot with those colors.

edit: I found an example http://24.media.tumblr.com/4a66713700f65e66268a64f153099a85/tumblr_n3nqibCPUa1rkdwnqo1_500.png

That's not even helpful! Good color schemes tend to have four main colors or less. That's just a bunch of blue.

I should do one for Band of Brothers. Just greens and browns everywhere.

I'm just saying that's where it comes from. They put it up maybe so other people can draw or do whatever with it? Maybe they're just having fun with it????

Yeah, they may be having fun with it. But this is a thread about stuff I hate and that was one of the things I could remember.

I like seeing at the interesting ones. I assume the general idea is like taking something apart to look at the parts and learn how it works. A visual exercise, explores color theory by distilling the image down into a limited palette. You don't have to use the colors for anything, I think, or, at least, I never do.

On that grounds, the one you posted is boring. It's not very good even it it was meant to only focus on the blues - there's some vivid cyan shades they did not pick up at all. And no grays, not one pink-ish or tan-ish shade, with all those echoes of the skin tones and the reflections and light, and none of gray-greens on Molly's shirt and face or those odd brownish-green colors in the corner or... well, I felt like picking it apart, just to show some of what they didn't take: http://i59.tinypic.com/106a2qw.png

Obviously most of those wouldn't be used, (hello, little bit of wine red at the bottom) but maybe it shows a little of what it could be...
