It was so appalling. Padme wore that BDSM black leather corset number, and sat really close to Annakin by the fire, and they were feeding each other fruit, and then she was suddenly all "no, no!" It was excruciating and bizarre.

I'm all for women being able to dress how they like, but those were some seriously mixed messages. If she was supposed to be a strong, intelligent woman, she would be a tiny bit more self-aware than that. Just plain bad directing and writing on all fronts.

How did the director get such a bad perfomance out of Natalie Portman? that really takes some doing.

I kind of thought that was the point though. Padmé is sending mixed messages because she herself is confused. On one hand, she's lonely and cares about Anakin. But on the other hand, she knows they can't be together because Anakin would have to give up being a Jedi or they would have to live a lie. And so she's as war with herself as much as she is sending him mixed signals.

I thought most of the point of that scene was yet another costume change. Got to hook the little girl demographic, to make sure the production costs are fully covered (the robot army takes care of the little boys).

I understand your point, but I don't agree with it. Both Padme's other outfits to that point, and how she behaved before, were so at odds with that scene.

I could see what they were trying to do, but it didn't work. It was like screenplay by numbers, as if an alien (ironically enough) with no real concept of how humans actually worked had written the relationship.

I thought the outfit was really about foreshadowing. They're talking about how the relationship will destroy them…

And Padmé's wearing a corset that constricts her breathing, with a black choker around her neck, in front of flames.

Anakin even says, "The thought of not being with you, I can't breathe."

I always thought that scene was extremely heavily alluding to the fallout of Mustafar, where Anakin will choke Padmé.

The scene is basically them recognizing why they shouldn't be in a relationship and yet they do so anyway -- with disastrous results.

DA

This... sounds kind of plausible. I am impressed!
