Was YGO the first fandom to do that? I thought Pokemon did it too. Not sure which came first, though.

I think Pokémon came first, given that Rocketshipping played a big role in popularizing the word "shipping" in fandom.

I remember when I first heard of Rocketshipping, I was like "what a gloriuos pun". That was before I knew that "-shipping" was a common suffix for ships. It would make so much sense for that to have started it all...

Well, since Pokemon is older than YGO, it probably was Pokemon. Or maybe they each did it independently.
