Re: Fandom trends you're hating
(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 03:26 am (UTC)(link)Honestly, there are just some things where the setting is so important and has such an influence on the characters that I can't picture a modern AU at all. Hunger Games is a big example that comes to mind. The Hunger Games and the oppression that the districts lived under shaped Katniss in such a way that she wouldn't even be the same person if she were placed in a normal, modern universe. Same with something like Attack on Titan. Eren is so driven by his rage against the Titans and the fact that he and everyone else have been trapped inside the walls and "live like cattle" that I can't really picture him in any other setting (not to mention that if he WERE the same bucket of rage in a modern day setting then he would probably be getting a lot of therapy. His blind determination and anger actually turns out to be a huge asset against the titans. In the real world, his murderous rage...would not be) It probably wouldn't bother me so much if both of these fandoms didn't have such an extreme amount of modern AUs. Why?? Both stories have such interesting settings that I don't even understand why someone would be compelled to put them somewhere else. Is the coffee shop!AU really more interesting? Really?
