I saw the idea of the Tardis being alive and sapient way back in the 1990s Virgin Publishing New Adventures novels. However there she seemed a bit more intimidating, slightly threatening and very possessive of the Doctor. Though in those books most POVs those hints of the Tardis are seen through is the POV of companions, like Ace, or Bernice Summerfield.

But on the bit about the Tradis not having a human consciousness, the episode did try to convey that, but how well people picked up that factor is likely very ymmv.
