I think this is not just the province of teenage fans, but any new fan. I was all eager in my first few years online, as a young 20-something, and read a whole lot of stuff of greatly varying quality.

I went back to a few of my early fics not that long ago (because I returned to an old fandom) and was really put off to realise the utter dreck I read back then.

I have to wonder how often that happens to long-time fans.
