I didn't say anything about a weapon, just that it's not wise to tell people to cry for help without also telling them the possibility of bystanders doing jackshit. Just like it's not wise to tell people to carry a weapon without telling them the possibility of it being used against them. As you just said, there is no perfect precaution, and adults have to make their own decisions about what chances they're willing to take. Harping statistics doesn't help when you still end up the unlucky bastard on the extreme end of the curve, considering that, statistically speaking, you're far more likely to be attacked by a friend than a stranger, and orders of magnitude more likely to die of heart disease than a mugging, but we're discussing it anyway.
