As a fan, I guess I kind of never thought that going anywhere or resolving anything was the point.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC, it has already ended and the last volume ships in July.

But yeah, even fans of the series complained about how it went nowhere. Mostly concerning Keiichi's and Belldandy's relationship.

Oh! My Goddess is still going on? Shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! That was my reaction, too. I thought it had ended years ago.

It's older than me; the manga first started being published in 1988.

I had absolutely no idea that this ran THAT long.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, shit, it's as old as me. That's crazy.

SERIOUSLY? I knew it was an old series but I didn't realize that it was older than me as well!

Wow, it's ending? I hadn't realized it was still going on! I wonder how it's going to end?

Don't the chick and the dude get married at the end?

For some reason I'm taken back to the late 90's when people gave the MST treatment to fics but and would use other anime to replace Joel/Mike and the bots. Oh wow. If I had the time I would spend weeks in nostalgia reading those fics...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, shoot, I REMEMBER THAT.

Dangit, I was 14 for a second there...

I know! I wonder if there's just one site out that that lists the popular ones. Or if they're just lost in the Geocities sands of time. The Ratliff chronicles, Megane, heh, Usagi's usual morning… Oh wow. I can't believe I've kept these files. But I saved a ton of them using Netscape (oh god I'm so old) so I don't even know if they'll open in other applications now.

And I'm not going to try right now. It's too late now to get stuck in those sands!

I'm actually impressed it's still going, I only read a couple of volumes before I gave up but I figured it would have ended years ago.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
the art is aggressively pretty, I wonder if the creator will retire, if not, I hope they team up with a really exciting writer. I'd like to see what sort of comic he could make with a strong plot oriented story

He did the character designs for Sakura Taisen, the manga version isn't drawn by him but it's based off his designs... might be worth checking out (it's still on going and has a rather slow pace because it likes to add a lot of extra material to the games' story, but I like it).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
He also did characters designs for several of the Tales Of games. To just name a few, the character designs for Abyss, Vesperia, and Symphonia were done by him.

I always thought of Oh! My Goddess as being closer to a sitcom/dramedy type of comic, with a lot of status-quo resetting and only the occasional nod to passing time or changing relationships. Its strengths, to me, were high-energy comedy, some touching sweetness and romance, and lovingly-rendered machines and clothes.

In a similar vein to your post, though: I read maybe the first dozen volumes, but when flipping through some of the later volumes, I think the aspects I enjoyed have kind of just... flattened out, not really hitting as strongly as before. The art shift is honestly not my favorite, either; while it strengthened in the early volumes, I'm neutral about the current character design and way too distracted by the current usage of blank backgrounds (OMG has always had them, but I think they used to be more judiciously placed and paced out). Not really surprised how long it's run, but the few other readers I know have also dropped it.

Sometimes, you just have to flow down the stream and take your lumps. Yeah, it sucks the first time you hit a rock, but after a while you get used to it, and the bruises clear up after some time.

I had no idea this was still going on! Damn!

All I know is that when I was like 15 I was positive that I would name any future daughter "Belldandy" because that was the prettiest name ever.
...actually I still thing that's a pretty name.

I stopped reading a couple years back, not really giving up on it just lost track of it... now I'm going to have to complete my collection and finish the series off.

I've been collecting this since high school (with the Dark Horse editions flipped to read like regular Western books). I knew it had to end somehow, some day, but it's still hard, and I feel like they could have gotten even more life out of the characters, but Fujishima probably wants to write something else or retire too. Serialized stuff is hard because it itself doesn't know what it's going to be, which makes for incoherent story progression. I can't blame you for giving up; I could never read Bleach or any of the Shonen Jump series for that reason.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been going on ALL THIS TIME?!?! Oh dear god I'm glad I quit following that and just let the OVA ending be enough.
