Fan Theories

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some theories or reasonings for things in canon that are glossed over or aren't explained?

I'll put mine in a reply so this isn't a block of text.

OP:
My most recent one is about the Winter Soldiers shave. People in fandom wondering why Hydra shaved him but didn't cut his hair got me thinking about it and I eventually came up with my own theory for it.

I think Hydra originally didn't, but then had to start routinely shaving him after his beard nearly allowed him to escape. During one of his early arm procedures, when they were still worried about being detected, they needed him to inhale some of the drugs so they'd break down more quickly and wouldn't be as easily identified if Shield discovered them suddenly.

The beard Bucky'd grown left an ever-so-slight gap in the seal of the mask, not enough to make a difference to anyone else, but enough for a modified super-soldier to enough clean air to claw his way to blurry consciousness mid-procedure, kill his doctors, destroy a bunch of valuable equipment, and kill a whole bunch of Hydra soldiers before someone got lucky with a tranquilizer gun. Hydra then revamped their Winter Soldier project to have bigger rooms, smaller staff and an armed guard at every procedure.

Plus, I just like the idea of Shield or the Avengers going through Hydra code books and being really puzzled to come across an old alert code that authorizes use of all the big guns called "Code Stubble". Maybe finding out eventually that it means someone forgot to shave the Winter Soldier before some arm maintenance and he's now on a killing spree.

I always assumed it is because beards are generally seen as distinctive (also unacceptable in some areas that Bucky might need to infiltrate). Long hair is as well, but that can be put in a cap or styled as needed.

Also a beard would prevent his mask from not working.

Maybe something in the process inhibits the growth of facial hair...

I have my own theory about this.

Name two things:

1.) An unshaved face would have made keeping that mask on difficult. It would have obscured his face, sure, but likely not enough for a world in which Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are celebrated war-heroes with their identities public knowledge since WWII. Better to keep the face smooth to make the mask easier to manage, as well as the soldier's own day-to-day hygiene (less to bother maintaining). And in the event you do need a short beard or some stubble to throw off facial recognition because he can't have his mask? Pretty easy to grow, in comparison to the facial hair, which leads into point number 2:

2.) Going on that, it would be easier to "style" for a certain mission if he needs to blend into a certain region or standard of hair style. It's much easier to cut hair to a satisfactory length than to grow it to one. Keep his hair as long as possible without it impeding him, then if at any moment you need it shorter, a few snips and it's done. If you kept it perpetually short but then one day needed his hair a bit longer, you would have had to keep him out of cryo for months or even years just to get it to an useful length, which is the last thing they want.

/spent way too much time thinking about this and needs to get a life

Not gonna lie, though, I kind of want to read that Code Stubble fanfic. :P

It's more canon than a fan theory, really, but I'm pretty sure that in the Murder Rooms universe, Three Garridebs&the like is essentially Doyle's thinly veiled wish-fulfillment RPF of himself and Bell.

Mine is rather obscure, even for LotR/Silmarillion fans.

Ingwë, Finwë and Elwë - the three Elves who went to investigate Valinor when the Valar invited the Elves to move there at the beginning of time - are not Awakening Elves.

To briefly explain, the Elves first appear in Arda (the World) on the shores of a lake, Cuiviénen. Tolkien came up with this cute story about how the Elves wake up in pairs, wander the shore of the lake and start running into other awakening Elves, eventually starting to outline the pre-Valinor racial groups under the leadership of the three first couples.

The fan theory/headcanon I have is that Ingwë and Indis (his sister) are the children of Imin and Iminyë, Finwë is the son of Tata and Tatië, and Elwë, Olwë and Elmo were the sons of Enel and Enelyë.

It's a completely pointless concept for most fans, since most fans don't write as far back as the Awakening or the migration to Valinor, but my RPing a Silmaril makes me contemplate Finwë's extended family and the female influences on the Silmarils as they were growing up.
