Re: stressful dreams

I have a lot of experience with the kinds of dreams you're talking about. It sounds like you've already found the first step--if you believe that you can fight the monsters, you can. The second step is apparently to realize that you're dreaming, but every time I do that, I immediately start trying to wake up, and when I can't wake myself, I grow terrified and desperate.

I guess environment helps as well--my father stopped having nightmares when he switched to a less stressful job. I seem to carry my nightmares with me, though.

The truth is, I normally don't have any problem recognizing that dreams are dreams, and go along with them for the heck of it half the time (or just ignore the "plot" and do my own thing). I do have lucid dreams, and in those cases the dreams are usually far clearer and they don't scare me or anything. (heck, normally I like trying out various superpowers and stuff)

In these dreams, though, they're very unclear and not lucid - I probably sort of know I'm dreaming, but they weren't "bad" enough for me to force myself awake from. They just weren't exactly pleasant.

Trying to wake yourself up and not succeeding is terrible though :( I'm sorry you have to go through that.
