I consume a lot of heterosexual media and yet I am not straight.

Yeah, I've never really understood the idea that seems to float around that if someone enjoys or is interested in LBGT media or media that has an LBGT sort of theme to it, they must be some flavor of LBGT themselves. I mean, one only has to look as far as slash fandom to realize how not true that is. I can see where someone who was closeted would be drawn to things that reflect who they really are, but it's not something you can just make assumptions about. Frankly I find it to be rather bad taste to be like "I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THIS PERSON ISN'T GAY" because how is anyone's business except that person's, if they haven't come out in public about it? Especially considering the level that some people have taken it (looking at you, SPN stans.)

Probably the same reason everyone assumes that if someone is homophobic they must be some flavor of LBGT too.

Which is just as bad imo.

And I consume quite a lot of LGBT media and I am. It's almost like people can like diverse things.

Is it possible to not consume a lot of heterosexual media?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Anything is possible with effort.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If you go really far down the rabbit hole.

Yeah, but you'd have to avoid almost all media.

Maaaaaybe 10% of the books on my shelf/kindle are focused on straight people/straight content.

You wouldn't happen to have some good queer fantasy in there, would you? I need to add more to my reading list.

I'm not sure if that really counts as proof...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well uh I write gay romance and I'm not even sure if I have a sexuality. Hm.

haha i know! i was just making a lazy joke

Why Mommie Dearest? He kept talking about how hot he found Faye Dunaway and Joan Crawford throughout.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's considered a cult/camp classic. Apparently, it has a large GLBT fanbase. Mostly for the overblown acting (I think anyway).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's because Joan Crawford herself, is a GLBT icon. Think of it as having someone who is into Cher, Mariah Carey and Barbra.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, isn't he the one who's open about being bisexual?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
If he openly admits it, then that's fine.
It's just that labeling him purely based on the movies he reviews is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I know Mommie Dearest is a cult movie in the gay community for... some reason...
but Brad's review focused around how actually disturbing the depictions of child abuse were and how he didn't understand why it's become known as a comedy. (And how hot Faye Dunaway is.)

Not a lot gay about that. I don't know or really care about his sexuality, but I don't see why reviewing a movie about child abuse would indicate that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
He's a reviewer and he's reviewed things on a very wide spectrum, including an E.T (yeah the 'E.T phone home' alien) porno. I don't think it's fair to label him using the stuff he reviews as proof.

He watches a very wide variety of stuff... obscure stuff, weird as fuck porno's, foreign films, he even goes to the movies for midnight viewings on every film opening with his friends. So how does a few of the movies he's reviewed say anything about his sexuality?
