That's what sensible people would say, but unfortunately, very few racist fundamental Christians are sensible and manage to find LOTS of passages to justify racism. Slavery, too. You know how the abolitionist movement emphasized how black people were humans and didn't deserve to be treated worse than animals? Well, that's because there were plenty of people who believed them to be sub human and destined for slavery, and they found Biblical justification for their horrible beliefs.

There were also actual Christians (Quakers) who took those justifications/prooftexts and beat the snot out of these assumptions/readings-in to the text, using the text itself. OK, using the Geneva translation of the text itself, if you want to be really picky. But still.

Slavery is easy to justify if you take a literal Paul interpretation, but I'm curious about the racism bit (at least, the racism we deal with in the US, since I don't know as much about racism in other places, but I know it was Biblically justified once upon a time).

In a similar vein, it's kind of amusing but mostly sad to see my conservative friends/acquaintances bend over backwards to put "context" around Paul's words regarding slavery while they insist on taking the bits about homosexuality literally. If these same people had lived 150 years ago (or maybe even more recently), you can bet they'd be singing a different tune about the slavery passages.

Even then, it's been argued that he was talking about indentured servitude rather than slavery.

Well yeah, but only if you're to be bothered with silly things like translation inadequacies, since the NIV literally uses the word "slaves"

But it's a translation people use. I'm not talking about actual text/meaning, I'm talking about people justifying behavior based on the Bible.
