(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)That's what sensible people would say, but unfortunately, very few racist fundamental Christians are sensible and manage to find LOTS of passages to justify racism. Slavery, too. You know how the abolitionist movement emphasized how black people were humans and didn't deserve to be treated worse than animals? Well, that's because there were plenty of people who believed them to be sub human and destined for slavery, and they found Biblical justification for their horrible beliefs.

In a similar vein, it's kind of amusing but mostly sad to see my conservative friends/acquaintances bend over backwards to put "context" around Paul's words regarding slavery while they insist on taking the bits about homosexuality literally. If these same people had lived 150 years ago (or maybe even more recently), you can bet they'd be singing a different tune about the slavery passages.
