Re: Favourite poem

High Flight by Gillespie Magee! <3

When I was in middle school, I was in an outside-of-school band that played the piece "Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew" for a concert and I thought it was so cool. (For a while it was my favorite concert band piece.) It was based on this poem, written by a young WWII pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force who later died of an accident on base. I think it's very beautiful and reflects how I feel about flying and nature and stuff and the spiritual importance it has to me as well as the sheer exhilaration and wonder. yeah, super cliche but w/e.

Oh! I have breached the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting winds along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And while, with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

gghhhh wow I got chills just typing it in here. It's so beautiful. I don't revisit it very often, so it's kind of special each time I do. <3
