I really do not understand how "being the man he always professed to be" should somehow inspire respect.

If I profess to be a serial killer, and I follow up by going out and killing lots of people, then I'm walking my walk and talking my talk, but I'm still a terrible human being who should be, at minimum, locked away.

That's an extreme and hyperbolic example, mind, but the point stands. The fact that someone is "being who he is" doesn't make him worthy of respect if being who he is involves being a bigot and/or an asshole.
