I agree with you that homophobia is wrong and that being a Christian doesn't necessitate being a bigot, but some of your points don't really stand up.

1. I don't recall Jesus ever specifically addressing rape, either. Or child abuse. There are good reasons to be against homophobia, but "Jesus never said anything about it!" isn't one of them, given the laundry list of things that didn't appear to be a priority for him.

2. Catholics, and especially American Catholics, are all over the map on a variety of social issues. You have nuns who are pro-birth-control and you have the likes of Rick Santorum who seems to hate all the same things conservative evangelicals hate. The Catholic Church hierarchy is not as vitriolic as some fundamentalist preachers, but they're not exactly friends to the LGBTQ community, either.

3. Agreed - to a point. Religious positions don't make anyone an asshole, or prevent them from being one... but some assholes do successfully use religion as a shield for their assholery, because of the privileged position that theistic belief enjoys in our society. It needs to become more acceptable for people to say, "I don't care if that's your sincerely-held religious belief, it's still a shitty opinion."

+1 I hope everyone who uses the "BUT BUT JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESUS!" excuse reads this.
