Very good book. If you get to the final book in the series - let me tell you, every single piece she lays out in that book pays off. Enjoy!

Yes, please! That whole series is so intense and melodramatic on a whole nother level, it's such a fun ride.

I do want to read those eventually but I'd rather have some variety for now and wait a while before doing another book by the same author so soon

either something unashamedly literary

or something indulgently historical fic/high fantasy/sci fi

ursula k le guin perhaps?

Le Guin could be cool. James Tiptree would be great for sci-fi but she's more of a short story writer.

Lord of Light maybe? That's good, not too long a read, and probably some good opportunity for discussion. Or for historical/alt-historical someone from the Tim Powers / James Blaylock / KW Jeter group? The Stress of Her Regard could be good - English Romantic poets + awesome supernatural stuff.

Actually, I'm going to nominate that. I've never actually read it but Powers is a really good writer and it sounds fantastic. The Stress Of Her Regard.

On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony, the first in the Incarnations of Immortality series. The rest are hit or miss and some outright suck, but I love this one.

Piers Anthony for Book Club, huh. After a few subthreads about his how gross his writing can be, it might be fun.

It's been awhile since I've read them and some of the books probably are like that (I honestly don't remember) but I don't *think* this one is. I could be wrong.

Re: Book Club

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if it is either. Been years since I read any of his stuff and that was just the Xanth series.

Re: Book Club

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Even with how gross his stuff can be [and how plasticy it always feels to me] this one was awesome. I like most of the Immortal series, but...I'll have to disagree with whoever said this one wasn't sexist. The beginning *did* have some of it from what I remember. [Like, right at the beginning before stuff started happening.]

Oh plus fucking one.
creepy evil fucker though he may be, that book is wonderful.
Kinda sad that he is such an asshole, because the world he built had such promise.
